FAA Tasks ACS Working Group with Military Mechanic Written Competency Test Development
In a significant move aimed at addressing the unique challenges faced by military aircraft maintenance technicians transitioning to civilian aviation roles, the FAA has assigned a new task to the ACS working group through the Aviation Rulemaking Advisory Committee (ARAC). This initiative is designed to bridge the knowledge and skill gaps between military and civilian aircraft maintenance practices by recommending standards and testing requirements for a military mechanic competency test.
The FAA’s directive stems from Section 426 of the FAA Reauthorization Act of 2024 (Public Law 118-63), which mandates the development of a written competency test tailored to the experiences of military mechanics. This task also includes the creation of a relevant ACS, if deemed necessary, to facilitate the qualification of military technicians for civilian mechanic certificates with airframe or powerplant ratings. The detailed recommendation report is due 12 months after the first meeting.
This initiative marks a critical step forward in recognizing the contributions of military aviation professionals and facilitating their integration into the civilian aviation industry. By aligning military and civilian standards, the FAA aims to enhance workforce mobility and address the growing demand for skilled aviation maintenance technicians in the United States.
