Congress Highlights the Importance of the Aviation Technical Workforce
On July 10, 2024, the House Subcommittee on Aviation conducted a hearing titled "Eliminating Bottlenecks: Examining Opportunities to Recruit, Retain, and Engage Aviation Talent." This session underscored the critical need to address workforce challenges in the aviation sector, including the aviation technical workforce.
The hearing highlighted the need for robust recruitment and retention strategies, underscoring the significant shortage of skilled technicians, exacerbated by rapid technological advancements and increasing air travel demand. Witnesses emphasized the important role industry and educational institution collaborations play in developing effective training programs that align with industry needs and standards.
Congressional leaders heard about the urgent need for investment in technical education and how enhancing educational pathways and supporting training programs ensures a steady pipeline of qualified aviation technicians. The discussion also touched on the implementation of the FAA Reauthorization Act of 2024, which includes provisions to support workforce development.
ATEC has long recognized that legislative support is vital for addressing workforce pipeline bottlenecks and successfully worked with members and our coalition partners on several FAA reauthorization provisions that will increase and expand FAA workforce grant funding, aid military transitions, improve the certification system, and expand access to airman testing. Join us in September to learn more about the implementation of these provisions, further engage with ATEC’s legislative efforts, and connect with policymakers.
