ATEC Supports Legislation to Reintroduce the Aviation Workforce Development Act

This week, Representative Mike Collins (R-Ga.) reintroduced the Aviation Workforce Development Act (H.R. 1818), which would make training at FAA-certified commercial pilot and aircraft maintenance technician schools a qualified expense under 529 college savings plans.

529 plans are tax-advantaged investment accounts designed to help families save for education. Initially, they could only be used for four-year university degrees, but Congress has gradually expanded their use to include apprenticeship programs in certain trades—though aviation training has largely been left out.

ATEC is among 15 industry and labor groups supporting the bill, as it aligns with efforts to attract more candidates to aviation careers. While this legislation would provide new benefits for aspiring pilots, most aviation maintenance schools—being accredited—already qualify for 529 funds.

ATEC will continue advocating for workforce development initiatives like this to ensure a strong pipeline of future pilots and mechanics. Read more.
